Are you a good parent?
How do you know?
What makes you a good parent?
Being a parent is probably one of the most important and difficult tasks to undertake and yet the only qualification needed is the ability to procreate.
If you’re like most parents, you parent the way your parents did, where it’s not something you give much thought to and you simply make it up as you go along.
When I work with training coaches, I often iterate that a coach can never guide a client beyond the place where the coach is at. This therefore forces the coach to continually “stretch and grow” themselves in order to be ahead of the game. What if this is true for parenting? What if it’s impossible to take your child beyond the place where you’re at and what if taking your child beyond where you’re at, is your main function as a parent?
Children are being born more highly evolved than ever before. It seems as though they come pre-programmed with knowledge about technology and a need to express themselves differently than previous generations. This often leaves parents playing catch up and overwhelmed by the complexities of parenting. For the most part, a parent will revert to an inherited default parenting style that usually consists of some version of command and control. This invariably stifles a child’s need for self-expression and a war of wills ensues, leading to a breakdown in the relationship.
What if children are meant to challenge the status quo, to question the established order? What if this is how humanity evolves? And what if parenting is about facilitating this process and enhancing it rather than being an obstacle in its path? What if parenting becomes a voyage of discovery into new ways of being where both parent and child are challenged to evolve and grow in a dynamic partnership and where together something new and extraordinary is created?
