Focus Your Way To Excellence
One of the primary tasks of a leader is to effectively manage people and resources. To do so with any degree of success every leader must cultivate a triad of awareness according to Daniel Goleman, author of Focus, the Hidden Driver of Excellence. Inward focus and focusing on others helps leaders to develop emotional intelligence while focusing outward can improve their ability to design strategy, innovate and manage organisations.
People commonly think of “being focused” as filtering out distractions while concentrating on one thing. Recent neuroscience research shows that we focus attention in many ways for different purposes, using different neural pathways. Being able to have singular, laser-like focus for one task and then to seamlessly shift to see the “big picture” with a more expansive or even diffused focus takes control and practice. You could often find the high powered executive single-mindedly pushing and succeeding in achieving career or business success, while their health, personal relationships and social aspects of their lives fall apart. They have the ability to focus on one level but lack the skill to see the bigger picture, to their detriment.
The SOAR Breakfast Talk will explore the different ways in which we focus, the benefits and drawbacks associated with these, and how to develop a more effective approach to holistic focus.
